How to Arrange on Piano With Drop 2 voicings
Drop 2 is easily adapted to Alex Bohrer's "Piano Phraseology" learning system. While it has been used more often in piano lessons for adults, it can be equally effective in arrangements created for piano lessons for kids. As always apply the Cool Piano Teacher "Piano Practice Meditation" technique when learning these for a more enjoyable & effective experience Learning how to voice a tune with drop 2 phrasing on the piano is easier than you might think. This method is great for chords in the 1st inversion and there are many combinations possible. To begin, start with a C7 chord, which sounds pretty nice in 1st inversion. Then, peel it down, revealing a more exciting two-handed C7 chord. Once you've discovered the basic pattern, try re-voicing the C7 chord. Drop voicing is a great way to make your music sound more open and graceful. Drop 3 is a similar technique, which changes the inversion of a chord. For your first song, try experimenting with Drop 2 voicing, and you'll be amazed at how quickly it becomes second nature! Once you have the basics down, you can move onto other types of voicing To create a drop 2 voicing on piano, let's start with either a 1st inversion Dm7 chord or D7 chord. You'll use the top two notes of the chord as a treble clef, which is a perfect fourth. To make the chords more melodic, you can use a sharp or a flat for a descending scale. This technique can be used in many other ways on the piano Once you've mastered the treble clef, you'll need to learn how to drop the octave in the left hand. You can create a closed, three-note voicing with your left hand by adding one octave to the middle. A 2nd inversion triad will be created by raising an octave. In both cases the drop note is higher than the original. The main difference between the drops 2 and treble clef is the note in the middle. A thickened line contains three or four notes and moves in parallel motion. The octave of the third is inverted in a drop second voicing. It also has a tremolo above the original. The drop 2 voicing avoids the minor seconds. This technique is easier to learn and more accessible. This allows you to play faster and more efficiently. ©Cool Piano Teacher LLC
